GEARS uses Meshtastic as an alternate form of communication for GPS location services and text messaging – similar to text messaging on your smart phone.

We also use the technology for sensor telemetry and alerting, as well as for learning and experimentation.

Get Started

You’ll need to purchase hardware and then download software – e.g, the meshtastic app, the web client or the wonderful MeshSense app developed by N3FJP.

Meshtastic works by using a node to connect to the mesh network. Your computer, tablet or smart phone can then be used to talk to your node and exchange data with the network.

Hardware – Turnkey

Let’s start by finding the right hardware. GEARS recommends the RAK wireless products because we’ve had good experiences with them.

RAK has ready-to-go solutions, including the WisMesh Pocket Mini for $59.97 and the WisMesh Pocket V2 for $89.00. Be sure to order the USA 900/915MHz variant.

Hardware – DIY

If you’d like to build a custom node to your own specifications, you’ll need a few items:

  • Meshtastic board (e.g. wisblock starter kit, Heltec V3, LilyGo T-Beam Supreme)
    • Any devices you’d like to add on, such as a GPS/GNSS module.
  • Power source – internal lithium ion battery or external USB supply.
  • Case to contain the device (GEARS will provide 3D-Printed cases to members if you ask nicely)
  • Optional external antenna
